The exact same thing happened to my toilet about an hour ago. Keep plunging - it should go down eventually.

set the plunger in the toilet. Tuck a lightweight towel around the edge of the plunger cup to get a good seal. Then plunge. If you need to flush again to see if you got it, remove the towel and the lid to the tank. If when you flush, the water rises too high, in the tank, pull the water inlet hose out of the little clamp and redirect the water stream directly into the tank, not the filler tube. That way the bowl won't overflow. DON'T use a metal, unprotected snake in the toilet.

Try the plunging as suggested in other answers. Somewhere in the line there is a Y clean out. The pipe actually makes a Y configuration, and on one end of it there should be a clean out access.

Snake through this hole to see if the blockage is beyond the toilet and further down the line. Plan on getting dirty.

Another use full tool is a balloon. You can by one of these at a local hardware store, it attaches to the end of a garden hose. Buy one to fit the pipe you are working on. Generally 4 inch.
It will not be 4 inches in diameter but will blow up to 4 inches when filled with water.

These creates a strong forceful jet action down the pipe. Push down the pipe as far as you can get it, with out any water applied and then turn on. This is only a temporary fix, if there is something blocking the line such as tree roots etc.... then you will need to fix at a later date.

This should allow you to at least get the toilet running properly if the blockage is beyond the toilet itself. Have to start somewhere.

Good Luck

Take some of the water out with a bowel then go crazy with the plunger. Unless you put something wrong into the toilet, it should go down with plunging.

It can be and is very dirty. It never happens with urination, as there is only water and, with females, a little pat of toilet paper.

A plunger is necessary and usually works, but gets filthy dirty with poop.

Then there is the case where the small child flushes a toy or potato. Only a plumber can fix it, and sometimes, you have to replace the toilet. How do you get a potato out of a toilet crook?

TAKE A PLUNGER AND PLUNGE IT DOWN,, MATERIAL HAS IT BACK UP.

IF YOU WAIT A FEW MINUTE UP TO 30 MINUTES TRY IT AGAIN.

YOU PROB AREN'T GETTING ENOUGH AIR DOWN THE TOILET TO GET A GO PLUNGE.

IT YOU HAVE A SEPTIC TANK YOU CAN TRUN ON WATER AT A FAUCET-DOES WATER RUN FREELY-IF SO THEN IT IS NOT SEPTIC TANK-IT IS JUST YOU TOILET OR LINE CLOGGED.

YOU MIGHT HAVE TO SNAKE IT OUT. WITH A METAL SNAKE,,
IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW JUST GET A FRIEND TO DO IT FOR YOU.

ANOTHER EASY WAY IS JUST TO LIFT TOILET OFF THE FLOOR. GOT TWO BOLT HOLDING TO FLOOR.

RE;PACE WAX O RING WHEN YOU DO THSI THAT IS THE WAX SEAL BWT BOWL AND FLOOR.

Get a 2 gallon pail, fill with water and forcefully throw it into toilet. If that doesn't do it, go get some liquid plumber. Good luck

Try pouring some bleach and leave it to soak. If it still dosen't go
down, or does drain and continue to clog. It is probably going to be tree roots growing in your sewer line. Which means you will have to call a plumber to take care of. Good luck.
