My reason was to help others. I have been sponsoring a child from haiti and I didn't even claim it in my taxes.

Well, it depends on your ethics and the way you were taught and learn.
As a rational personality, i will try to help people and at the same time will ask for a deduction to save money .. and from saving money i can think of helping people again more in the future. This will not be a burden on me to re help again since i will be having tax deduction.

The only reason I ever gave was to help others. I never did the deduction trip.
