The "Acting with an Accent" series of dialect tapes are just about the best I've ever heard. Dr. Stern is VERY "user-friendly;" he gets down to the nuts-and-bolts of dialect work, but he also describes the process in very intuitive terms (i.e., where should the sound be PLACED in the speaker's mouth).

Contrary to popular mis-conception, proper dialect work is NOT merely a matter of listening and imitating. Do yourself a favor and consult tapes and printed texts (it really helps if you know a little of the International Phonetic Alphabet, too). Stern is very good. You might also look for Jerry Blunt's book/tapes; he used to be the gold standard in the field.

The best website I know of is the Dialect Archive at U of Kansas (IDEA) - link is below.

Another great resource is the instructional CDs by Gillian Lane Plescia. You can buy them at Drama Book Shop in NY, and she probably has a website as well.

I have a book called "Accents". I ordered it from Amazon. It has pretty much any dialect you could imagine. There's a CD that goes with it. It's great!!!
