Put a 1/2 cup of baking soda.....then pour in a cup of vinegar.
Do this at least once a month............it's cheap and chemical-free!

Good Grief--- I hope people don't throw food or grease down the drain. Sarah stated that she did not have a disposal. It was the drains that smelled funny and needed to be freshened up. That being said, try some type of drano and leave it in the pipes for a few minutes then flush with hot water. It's a good idea to do this periodically. Baking Soda is also a good freshener.

I pour about 1/2 c of baking soda in the drain and then pour some vinegar in it, the mixture bubbles and cleans the drain on the way down, when it quits bubbling add a little more vinegar and when that is finished just turn on the cold water and rinse it down.
Then if you drink coffee, pour the grounds down the sink and it will keep it smelling fresh and the grounds help keep the grease out of the drain.
When I do this, I never have trouble with my kitchen drains.

1. When you use the disposer, let the water run for a minute after you shut off the disposer. If you shut the water off too soon some of the garbage stays in the pipes below your sink and starts to stink.
2. Use baking soda to get rid of additional odors.
Otherwise you don't really need to do anything.

There is a product that you can buy at WalMart called Drain Clean. Check with the dishwashing liquids, soaps, etc. You put a packet in your garbage disposal and turn the water on a slow steady stream. Turn on your garbage disposal, (If you have one) and it will create a blue foam that will come out on both sides of the sink, rinse everything and viola it should be clean and odors should be gone.
After that you can either put lemons in there weekly or orange peels and grind them away to create freshness.
If the odor is really bad and you can't get it to go away then you might need to turn off your water and have a check in your pipes under your sink, there could be mold or a small blockage causing the problem.
Good Luck!

This is only if you have a garbage disposal! Get a whole lemon and cut it into four pieces, drop the pieces down the drain and turn on the disposal. Don't really know if it gets cleaned, but everything smells clean and fresh and thats all I really care about.

Vinigar and bi-carb down the sink is good to help unblock it and clean the pipes and vinigar also acts as a disinfectant and lemon is also an acid so may be good to get rid of the odour. These are also all natural so it's worth trying first.

Bleach it first. Rinse well. This will get most of the bacteria caused odour.
Then load it up with Arm and hammer baking soda.
The baking soda will absorb all the smells... even the bleach smell

If you have a disposal system, take a slice of a lemon and put it in your disposal. In a while your kitchen will smell excellent.
