I have a 454 big block that i just dropped into my 76 chevy 4x4. The torque converter that i have wont bolt up to the flywheel and i just got the motor finished where i could start it but i heard somewhere that i could break the crankshaft if i start it without the torque converter bolted up. Is that true or can i start it but not rev it to much or is it just a myth?

No, the only thing the torque convertor does is transfer power from the engine to the transmission. It will not harm your motor if your start it and run it with out the torque convertor.

This is how we " broke in " many motors at the shop that we built. We dropped in the motor got it ready to fire, started it and ran it for a good 10 min, then started revvin it. All this was done with out a torque convertor installed.

sadly no, but you can report him to the BBB. I am a mechanic myself, and not everything will show up in diagnosis, expecially if there is a mojor problem occuring (ie, needing an engine rebuild). I wouldn't hold it against him. I would ask him if there was a reason why he didn't mention it before and see if he knows the answer or if he really has to think about it. If he knows the answer right off the bat without thinking of it, chances are he is telling the truth and it didn't show up on the ignital diagnoses. If he takes a long time to respond chances are he is lying. Talk to him and see if since you just had a major repair bill, if they can cut you a deal or not. But i would hear him out comptley first. Not everything comes out on the first diagnoses, and a torque converter can be a hard thing to diagnosis.

No it wont hurt.Actually if you did try to run the engine with the torque converter bolted to it without the transmission hooked up it could cause big problems.I believe all 454 engines are balanced internally also.A new flywheel(flexplate can be obtained from a auto parts store

The torque converter converts RPM's of the motor to the tranny so if your not going to move it then your will not have any problems!

The 454's are internally balanced so no problem starting it up.

I've know people to balance their motor by adding metal to the flywheel and this balance was done with the converter on the flywheel so in this specific case you would need it. If it was balanced without the converter then you wouldn't need it.

You cant take it out for a drive.
But you got a complete and functional engine without the torque converter.

Just add fuel.
