The basics -
Theory - 'the knowledge of '....
Practice - ' applying the knowledge'...
so - 'in a practical way ' - would mean doing something and keeping it straight and simple .
Non-practical would be doing something in such a way that the method or procedure is cluttered with things which make it more difficult and possibly would cost more than what it could or should, and takes more time to do than what it should.

for example , in school , the teacher says "ok class,tomorrow, we will have a practical test"
which means practical or it is not a written test.

yeah that makes sense--take your raincoat--if it rains you have it--if it does not rain-no big deal.. that is practical thinking.
if you don't take it you get wet.
