Ever since my father won an owl for me at a carnival when i was a litle girl, i have felt drawn to them. I collect them, wear them as jewellery and even have the odd dream about one. The one in my dream was pure white, and he had the bluest of eyes.

He looked at me in the dream and said; "i love you". I'll never forget it.

Can anyone tell me what these beautiful creatures symbolize?

Thank you.

There are a lot of superstitions associated with owls. Here are a few of them:
-- If an owl lands on the roof of your house, it is an omen of death. Constant hooting near your house also foretells death.
-- If an owl hoots at the moment of childbirth, the child will have an unhappy life.
-- The Irish believe that if an owl flies into a house it must be killed immediately. If it escapes, it will take the luck of the house with it.
-- If an owl nests in an abandoned house, then the dwelling must be haunted. An owl is the only creature who can abide a ghost.
-- By eating salted owl, a person can be cured of gout.
-- If an owl hoots during a burial service, the deceased is bound to rise from the grave and haunt the living.
-- An owl living in the attic of a house will cause a pregnant woman to miscarry.
-- If a pregnant woman hears the shriek of an owl, her child will be a girl.
Of course, owls are no longer considered harbingers of misfortune. Nor are they considered agents of witches or the devil. Still, even in these enlightened times, the eerie call of an owl in the stillness of the night can still make the skin crawl and bring back half-forgotten memories of the dark beliefs you heard in childhood.
Every thing I found on superstitions of owls was similar.

In many parts of the world, owls have been associated with death and misfortune, likely due to their nocturnal activity and common screeching call. However, owls have also been associated with wisdom and prosperity as a result of frequently being companion animals for goddesses.

I really don't know what they symbolize, but they are sure fun to listen to. We live in the forest, and for the past 2 months we have had 2 great horned owls talking to one another all night long.

In Native American culture they are a harbinger of death and are considered unlucky. My mother always loved owls and collected figurines and other owl things. I don't think they are unlucky but I know some people who do.

Owls don't 'mean' anything. They certainly don't mean to cause you concern unless you keep chickens, cats not kept indoors at night, or have anything else you care about that might be threatened by a nocturnal bird of prey.

I believe they are for signs.Something to do with isolation and inner searching and eternity-spiritual. I am a Christian and I feel that God inspired His prophets to use owls all through the bible to depict quite clearly stages we go through as we journey through life.

owls mean nothing, they are birds of prey, however symbolically they meant intelligence to many and one was the familiar of athena, and most indians thought when they hoot outside your window you will die, hence the line in the old michael mcdonald song wildfire.
