Ok... Now I assume u are using a standard IDE hard drive (uses those big ribbon cables to connect direct to your mother board)

Well does your CD-ROM/DVD run off of the same ribbon cable? If so have you checked the jumper settings?

If They use two different cables once again make sure you check the jumper settings.

If you are unsure about jumpers they are littel gold pins located inbetween the power cord and the ribbon cabel on the back of the hard drive. Usually on the label of the hard drive it explains what each setting does.

If your jumpers are fine, then you need to look at other things like how old is your hard drive? maybe its disks are not starting properly when your pc is booted.

You might want to try "flashing your BIOS" to see if that helps. I recently did mine and its made my pc much more stable. Just run that through google/yahoo and you will find lots of websites on it. Also go to your motherboards hoem page generally they have all teh information about flashing on there.

!!BEWARE!! If done wrong will screw up your motherboard completely!

Other than that i would say test with another Hard Drive, small ones can be picked up on ebay for dirt cheap.

Try switching around your IDE cables with your DVD/CD Drive.

See which works. Its probably the drive or the cables that are screwed rather than your motherbaord, they tend to last a pretty long time if treated right.

Hope this is some help.

Check the connections between the IDE interface of your hard disk and the Circuit board. Due to frequent removing & fixing of the IDE cable, some of the pins might be disconnected from the circuit board. Check and ask an expert to solder them. It will work like before then

Interchange the IDE cable to CD Rom drive and hard disk .
if CD Rom drive functions normally.
IN BIOS
select auto detect hard disk. .
select first boot from hard disk if this option not
already done
.with power on change the bios battery/cell 3V.

mayn even i had the same problem i knw its very irritatin to unplug your hard disk cables everytime u hav to start your computer ......well whn i enquired abt it they said the battery which starts the bios must hav got used up so i got a new battery placed......and if this doesnt work ur hard disk is abt to become trash so try and create a backup for ur files..........coz i heard the bios rarely gets corrupted.....well try changin the jumper positions also but its just a temporary solution

Three possibilities, in order of likelihood:
1) Your hard drive is dying.
2) The ribbon or power cable is bad.
3) The motherboard's hard drive interface is going bad.

Do you have both the SATA cable and power cable connected? If only power is connected it would spin-up, but BIOS couldn't detect it. Do you already have a SATA drive installed on the system? It might be something with the BIOS only supporting one drive unless they are in a RAID configuration.

Do you have a hard drive and CDRW on same cable. If so check back of dive and look at your jumpers. (tiny plastic pin covers) one must me marked master and one must be marked slave or you will continuously run into problems like what you're describing.
