I would recommend either one of these two options.... The cheapest is annoying to maintain but very effective... Garden supply stores sell this product called blood meal; I used Scott's Natural Blood meal enriched with iron this last gardening season... It is most often used to prevent weeds and add iron if one's soil is iron deficient...though it is wonderful for keeping squirrels and other animals out of my garden. The animals think it was a spot where something was just killed and will stay away from there. I apply some at the perimeter of my garden, but it needs to be re-applied every time it rains for the most effective results... Or maybe something drastic like a dog or an electric fence might work?

I have heard that cats don't like vinegar. I think it has to do with urinating but it might keep them out of the yard if you spray the perimeter

Sprinkle a generous amount of Cayanne Pepper around the perimiter. Cats will step in it, & lick their paws. The cats will not like the taste of it but it won't hurt them.

I've heard cats hate mint. Plant it around the edge of your garden or property. As far as I know it is not harmful to them, but check just in case.
