There is a lot of good info flying around mixed with bad info. Bettas are easy to care if you follow some simple rules.

1)Keep in at least 2 gallons if not 5-10 gallons. Smaller than 2 gallons container should be changed every 4 days, and larger oncs once a week.

2)Don't over feed. A betta will happily eat himself to death. He only need about as much food as the size of his eye ball once a day 6 days a week.

3)Temp he needs to be kept in a temp above 70. Also when cleaning his bowl be sure the new water is the same temp as the old.

4)Read betta talk http://bettatalk.com/basic_care.htm

You know I don't like way that bettas are housed. They do well as a community fish! Just break down go to walmart and buy a 10 gal tank set up. They are like 40 bucks around here. Get gravel a few little planets. And let it run for about a month before you put any fish in it. Then you will only need to change the water 1/4 about every 2 weeks or so. Some people do 1/2 every two weeks. Remember 1" of fish per gal of water.

But if you have a betta bowl. The water need to be changed every day! And regular water changes can cause different problems such as swim bladder.

Depends on what you want in a pet. They are nice looking and reasonably hardy fish with good care. Be sure to treat the water, get a good quality food or two - maybe something like Hikari betta food pellet and then vary it with freeze dried blood worms. Remember that overfeeding is the number one cause of fish death in my experience -creates all sorts of problems. If you are careful with this you may get away with once a week changes. A lot depends on the size of the tank as well. Try to avoid those super tiny bowls they often display bettas in. While they can live in them for a time, it is sort of like living in your closet.

Find an aquarium hobbyist web site, a local pet shop or an aquarium club where the people seem friendly and knowledgeable - join in. I remember when I first started with fish I learned a lot by listening to the 'veterans' at the local shop. I've seen some good communities online as well.

Best of luck.

Bettas are very easy pets! They usually need water changes weekly--but it depends on the size and the setup of your tank. I have a tank without a filter and I do two smaller water changes or one 20% change a week, depending on time.

There doesn't seem to be much agreement on exactly how often water changes are needed. Five different sources can give you five different answers. Some say 2 small changes a week, others say once a month.

I had a betta fish for over a year and loved it! Just have to be careful which type of water you use because chemicals can kill the fish. We used bottled spring water and that was fine. Faucet water isn't good for your fish. Easy to feed and tank stays clean for up to 2 weeks, but is suggested to clean once a week.

It is a good pet and is interesting to watch. I had a chinese fighting betta fish and it didn't like my pens that I would write with and it would puff up and become a 'fighter'.. I miss my fish now! My friend bought it for me for my birthday and brought it to school as my present! haha :)

betta fish are good pets they are interesting.they are pretty easy to take care of but I'm not that great with fish unless it's a sucker fish .
(some people are fish people some people aren't like me I'm not a fish person I'm great with birds plus they live longer and they can talk they make great pets they don't stink and you don't get slime all over you when you clean the cage like fishes just helping you).

With a betta fish you should clean it once or twice a week.it all depends on how dirty it gets.

NEVER PUT THEM WITH ANOTHER FISH BECAUSE BETTA FISH ARE FIGHTER FISHES SO THEY WILL KILL THE OTHER FISHES IT'S WITH.

Stick to it otherwise it will die trust me I know.
:)
Good Luck!
P.S.
sorry if i put to mush I'm really bored right now.
:(

Really experienced in animals and love animals so I know what I'm talking about(I watch animal planet to much)!hahaha

They are easy just don't put to males together in the same bowl. If you buy two males keep them in two bowls and bring bowls together watch they want to fight. Change the water every other day is fine. Careful do not drop them down the sink. I spent an hour one day getting one out while my kid was crying. It lived so I was a hero. It lived for another month so we just bought another one while the kids were not watching. When they ask why his color is changing, the young one believed us when we said it was fall season. I say easy fish but don't push your luck. They can survive a fall from 4 feet but not the drain in your sink.

Betta's are Chinese fighting fish, they come from china, where they live in dirty muddy water, where they grow rice I believe, so you don't really have to change the water to much but considering the way there so much chemicals in the water these days, just make sure the water is fresh and at the same temp as the water you received him in. yes they are good pets, better then goldfish, and they are beautiful. don't put 2 in the same bowl they will kill each other. the one I had would fallow my finger and when he ate I could hear him chew. pretty entertaining on a rainy day. hahahahahahaha, hope I helped. Bye.
