Because we were *angry* about 9/11.

We wanted PAYBACK. (And rightly so.)

And we had a President who led us to believe that going into Iraq was that PAYBACK. To this day, he connects Iraq to the "war on terrorism" ... that is specifically reminding us that that Iraq should be seen as a consequence of what happened to us on 9/11. All other reasons ... even the WMDs (which turned out to be non-existent anyway) ... were secondary ... the deep-rooted reason we originally supported the war was because of the basic desire to get some serious hammer-of-God PAYBACK for 9/11. And Osama Bin Laden was not a good target for that hammer ... how do you drop bombs on someone you can't find. So when this Admin. gave us an enemy we could bomb, we say "bring down the hammer."

It took a long time to realize that Iraq had NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11, that connecting Iraq to the "war on terrorism" is and always was bogus ... second, that the threat that Iraq posed to us with WMDs was also bogus ... third, that by turning to Iraq, we let the real perpetrators of 9/11 (Osama and AQ) off the hook ... fourth, that the prediction of how easy it would be was one big miscalculation after another (from "few American casualties", to "they will throw flowers", to to "mission accomplished!", etc.) ... and fifth, this "war on terrorism" is backfiring by making the terrorism threat *worse* ... by bringing the hammer not only on Sadam, but on all the people of Iraq, turned Iraq into far more of the middle-east headquarters for (a) recruitment, and (b) training of terrorists than it ever was before.

In short, we were rightly ANGRY about 9/11, which made it easy to manipulate us into believing that this Administration (a) had good reason for taking us into Iraq; and (b) knew what it was doing.

Becuase they are a gullible lot. All this talk about PAYBACK is nonsense as Iraqis had nothing to do with 9/11. If US had to indulge in PAYBACK hit Pakistan and the border of Aghansiatn and Pakistan. That is where the AQ guys are hiding.

Your question is based on a false assumption about what "most Americans" knew. We always knew it was a mistake. Now "most Americans" know it was a catastrophic mistake.

Because they were led down a primrose path for so long they can't get themselves off of it. They are so accustomed to lies they would rather have it than the truth. It is kind of like a drug to them. Sad, very sad.
