My husband recently became unemployed as an transmission consultant and has taken a job selling Volkswagons. He has worked for a couple months and has taken a very good attitude about success. He is highly motivated, knowledgable and his employer has told him he's an excellent candidate in making this profitable for him.

With the current economy I am wondering how the automotive sales industry will be, it worries me because it is not a steady income just yet. The dealership is brand new in a suburban area of the Twin Cities (MN). It's a beautiful building yet is quite new and unestablished. It has good ratings, however. Does anyone have any input on the automotive sales industry within the specifics I've discussed?

If you enjoy your job and are good at it, any career is worthwhile. People always need cars. Even when gas was 3 bucks here, people where buying new cars. The first answerer was correct about the sales reputation. Some people thing 'shady' when they hear the term 'cars salesman'. He has to be able to let it roll right of his back as he will hear many things he doesn't like. That's life, though, nothing is always perfect. In sales, you have months that are stellar and months where you quit. The trick is to budget accordingly and save your money during peak months to get you through the slow ones.

I'm guessing that by now you have heard all the jokes about used car sales men. So I'll not bother with that. VW is a good place to be as well as honda so don't worry. If worse comes to worse, there are always jobs for mechanics else where. If he has more than one set of job skills, he has a better chance of survival. That means you have a better chance of survival too. So keep him going.

You get a bad reputation as a car dealer because no matter what, ppl will hate you. And you have to be able to let what ppl say about you.
