I'm only 17 weeks along, and I'm unsure about what I'm feeling in my belly. I thought at first they were just growing pains, and didn't think much about it. What it feels like is a sharp jab, almost like a quick pinched nerve. It can be quite painful. I let my doctor know about this yesterday and she wasn't concerned, but she didn't tell me whether it was growing pains or kicking (the visit was so quick.) I'm starting to feel it more and am starting to think maybe it's the baby. I was always told the kicks feel like bubbles at first. These are no bubbles but painful jabs. They only last a second, but it can be quite surprising and can take my breath away. It definately feels different than the ache of the growing pains I feel regularly (which kind of feel like cramps.) Does anyone know if these feelings could possibly be the baby?

Do these jabs accompany movement on your part? Round ligament pain can be a quick, painful jab. They can happen when you sit, stand, sneeze etc. And they can definitely take your breath away especially if this is your first pregnancy. The round ligaments extend from each side of your uterus and as your uterus goes from orange size to watermelon size they get stretched out and it can hurt. Baby kicks generally don't hurt until you are in your 3rd trimester and the baby starts running out of space. Then you can actually feel an elbow, knee or foot pushing their way around. Hang in there, it's worth it!

I felt my baby at around 16 weeks, and it did feel more fluttery than painful -- it seems hard to believe that at the point you are at the baby could do anything that would hurt, but maybe you are extra sensitive. You could also be feeling growing pains, that's possible the whole way along. By now, you could be also feeling round ligament pain, which is also kind of painful (I had these at around 5 months).
Pay attention to when and where you feel this sensation -- if it's the baby moving, before long you won't have much doubt about it. In the beginning you may not be certain, but you'll get used to it, and it will become clearer that that's what's going on.
Good luck and congratulations!

I think every pregnancy is different, not just every person, but generally I think most start feeling their baby kick at between 4 and 5 months. I am heavy and started feeling my oldest at about 4 months and my younger son a little over 5 months and they both have completely different personalities as well. Probably not related to the kicking, just that they were different in most everything. I wish you all the luck in your pregnancy!

I dont think that is the baby kicking, prb. just growing pains. when the baby kicks that early in the pregnancy it feels like something rubbing across the inside of your stomach. when the baby kicks that early also it usually doesnt hurt. but the growing pains ans stretching does hurt. when the baby really kicks for the first time you will know believe. you will feel the difference from what you are feeling now.my oldest name is serena. good luck

the sharp pain is just your belly stretching, at 17 weeks you can sometimes feel the baby move when you lie very still and it almost feels like butterflyes in your stomach.

It could be anything/ If the baby is kicking, it could be pressing on your lugs which would cause you to get the "out of breath" feeling. I hope you havve a good pregnancy!

Probably not the baby. Just your uterus expanding to do it's job. Movement of the baby usually is hard to feel at first if you're active. It's feels kind of fluttery.
