The knowledge of geography in our country is terrible. I have always liked it, and when my kids were small, I got them little wooden map puzzles where you can remove the states and replace them. By the time they were in school, they knew most of the countries also.
It is unfortunately, not funny. Back when the hostages were kidnapped in Iran, we had only two people in our government who spoke their language:(

I sort of live in Washington, D.C. (I can walk into DC in 5 minutes, if that counts), so I always knew.
debralizj, D.C., is not in fact in Maryland. It is a district, which means it is independent. To give a short history lesson- Maryland and Virginia both wanted it so it became a district.
