Serve whatever you like for Thanksgiving. Turkey is the traditional meal because that's what the Settlers and Indians had for their meal. That's what they had because that's what was abundantly available. If the family is upset by it...maybe you could have both a turkey and one of your other choices. The big thing to remember is that it is a day to give Thanks and celebrate family.

My Family have Turkey and Ham at the Holidays. On Christmas Eve I have a Beef Roast however this is Thanksgiving. Have whatever you would like on your Thanksgiving your the one that is cooking all day and feeding your family.

Somewhere there is a turkey thanking you and his lucky stars!

So now they will have to kill a roast or a ham. heh heh

Kidding aside, I really think that Thanksgiving is a time for everybody to look forward to so they can all get together.

It seems like everybody always wants to have turkey and looks forward to it, so it wouldn't hurt to buy a small turkey and roast it.. It is so simple to do.

Then they would all love you for being so kind and thoughtful....and maybe come over to eat at Christmas. lol

No, it's not necessary; but it seems to be an American tradition.
Maybe consider serving a small turkey and and small roast or ham. That would probably suit all your family and it would not take away from tradition.
And consider the fact that Thanksgiving dinner is a celebration to give thanks for a bountiful harvest and they ate what they had.
Have a wonderful time and eat well!
Cheers!

Hi Redhead,

No I think you can eat whatever you choose just make sure you inform everyone that you are not making turkey then they can make the decision weather or not to eat with you. Now if you had ham or roast in the shape of a turkey that might be a different story!
I personally eat turkey healthier for you than ham too.
To each his/her own-what about spagetti & meatballs?
Besides it's a get together with family & friends so eat drink & be merry!
Have a good day & eat whatever you want!

You know my family has had Turkey every year for thanksgiving except for one year we had a leg of lamb and you know what. It still was a great family get together only the turkey didn't have to go in at the crack of dawn and it probably was the easiest year to cook and prepare the food than any other. Still whatever you want to have is up to you. Just remember Thanksgiving is a time of thanks and a time to be with your family. If you have those two eliminates than you should be able to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches if you wanted.

Hi,
I'm with you on this question...I personally am not crazy about turkey and therefore, I would prefer a ham or a roast.
Sometimes I cook both because I can't make up my mind as to which one I want the most.

We have turkey and a pork roast, we just started doing that a few years ago for some unknown reason. It's not necessary to have turkey. It is necessay to remember why we all gather for the holiday though.
