Since the ratio is 4:3, the number of people must be in multiples of 3+4 =7. So we can write the equation 3x+4x =84 and solve 7x=84. So x=12 and there would be 4x12=48 people with hamburgers and 3x12=36 with chicken (48+36=84).

48 people are eating hamburgers and 36 people are eating chicken
84 divided by 7(the ratios 4 and 3 are equal) equals 12
12 times 4 equals 48
12 times 3 equals 36
