recently my land turtle has shut himself up in his shell. he doesn't seem to be eating either. is he sick? or is this some form of hibernation?

Hibernating tortoises usually hide in a burrow. If your room temps are at all warmish and the tortoise is out in the open, it is not hibernating.

Does it feel really light compared to how it usually feels? This is not a good sign.

When you pick it up, oes it hiss or huff? Tighten up a little more? If not, it is not a good sign.

Can you tug on a limb? If it does not pull it back, this is also not a good sign.

If you are still not sure, give it a warm soak in a shallow container- only a couple inches of water. Most tortoises will eventually move during a nice warm soak.

Desert Tortoise Hibernation

Okay I have two desert tortoises and live in california, they do hibernate pretty deeply. But I keep them inside the house in a dark closet during winter usually. Mine do flinch or pull themselves further into their shell and you hear a kind of shooosh sound when they do. If you are in a different part of the country it could be colder and they will hibernate more deeply. Try this bring the tortoise inside your place in a box and let it warm up to about 60-80 degrees (whatever you feel confrtable in your house at) and then see if after a few hours if it becomes a little more lively. You can also put the tortoise outside in Sunlight if where you are it is more than 70 degrees or so duering the day. Good luck.

if he's no longer shifting in any respect, his legs and head are putting limp and he had fluid / drool coming from the nasal and mouth then im afraid your puppy has already expired, the fluid from the nostril sounds perhaps like he/she has ahad a respiritory an infection, the two way identity get your ultimate tortoise to the vets to ensure she doesnt have it to what temperature is the vivarium at? do you have the spectacular UV lights? what have you ever been feeding? what's the humidity interior the tank? there are alot of issues that could have contributed to this (have exciting shifting the sulcata while its finished grown. a three foot tortoise and at weighing over a tonne you've exciting lol)

Can you see him? I think you should try some things to try and see if he moves or not. Does he flinch when you touch him? I have a Russian tortoise and he seems to be sleeping alot more lately too... I think that it is due to the cold here... But I still dig him out of hiding everyday to make sure that he is still okay and he still comes out to eat...What kind of habitat do you have him in? That might have something to do with it too... Mine was staying covered a whole lot when I first got him and I just thought that was how they were but I found out that tortoises require two kinds of lighting... one for UV rays and the other for heat. He may just be cold.... let me know! Kdetanner@yahoo.com

I don't know much about turtles, but can't you just pick him up look in his shell and or like spritz water in it to see if his feet, or head flinch.
Or what about poking him with a blunt object, NO not hard enough to hurt him but just to kinda get his or hers attention?
I'd poke it in the pooper part I know darned well if I was a turtle and you poked me in da butt with something i'd surely flinch and or try and pee all over you, prolly stick my head out and try and bite the SOB who was messin with me too.
Hope he's ok, I like turtles, and try and stop for muddies on the tar before they become points for some teenager.
