As an avid crocheter and recycler, I would recommend crocheting one made out of plastic bags (grocery bags, drycleaning bags, etc.) I have links to show how this is done and websites that teach you how on my 360 blog for Oct.23 2006. They are lightweight and can be easily washed.

Outdoor carpet or plastic turf grass works great and is pretty inexpensive. when really dirty just hose off, shake and your back in business. It is also weather proof and lasts for a long time. Try to get some that is stiff, it gets dirt off shoes easier and is very durable. Good Luck. Bill

I like a bed of nails. Small nails placed very close together. They raise you up giving space for the mud/dirt to fall away from the soles of the shoes and are small enough and tough enough to dig out debris from the crevices of the shoe soles.

Nylon rope... weave it flat and tie off the ends to each other in a pattern. The rope comes in cool colors. Use the thick soft kind.

Astroturf. It is water resistent , it cleans your shoes better and it is easy to paint should you want to decorate it. Me, I just go out and buy a mat at the at the store from time to time. That way they never get too ugly.

Used tires will hold up forever--you can probably pick some up for free at your local dump (or recycling center or whatever your town/city calls it).
