I'm trying to upgrade from dial up to DSL and learning I don't have enough RAM. My system has 124 MB of RAM. The Yahoo DSL installation requirements are telling me I have 124 and 128 is recommended and I NEED 64 MB. What is the least invasive and least expensive way to get more RAM on my current system? Can I purchase this at Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. ? Easy installation for an average Jane?

If your computer has less than 128MB of memory, its likely pretty old. I'd suggest talking with the Geek Squad at Best Buy - they can help you source the right memory, and then actually install it...

Only 124 MB? Hmm, you need to open up your case and see if there is an available slot to put more RAM in. You may have to take the old chip or chips out and replace with new ones that are of a larger capacity. You need at least 512 MB . Sounds like you have a really older computer , check newegg.com or crucial.com for memory to fit your computer. Circuit City or Best Buy may not have the right memory for your computer, if it's an older model. The yahoo DSL install cd also puts a lot of other software on your computer...this is what really needs the extra RAM. Check dslreports.com, the AT&T forum on how to connect to the internet without the Yahoo software CD.

Ram is normal easy to install you might need to clear wires or move your drive bay witch can be more harder for average people. I find that in most 2000 and beyond systems make cases and motherboards so changing and installing ram is less annoying.

Ram is probably the hardest buy when it comes to computers because you may need to replace old ram and there are many types of ram. 95% chance that you will need unbuffed , Dimm ram probably two 128MB sticks should do it but if your system supports 512MB that might not be a bad idea.

I suggest you look for your motherboard name and research what it needs ask more questions here or speak to a tech some were you can buy ram in store for about 70$-90$ a stick and you will probably need 2-4 sticks.

You should be able to use DSL with the RAM you have right now. I don't see why it won't work with what you have. And you don't necessarily need to upgrade your computer, but it's a very good idea. It all depends on what you do on the computer. If you need RAM, then tech stores will usually do the installation for you if you pay an installation fee.

your computer does not have 124 that's not possible it has 128 and it uses 4MB to run the system. all memory allocations are a factor of 8. 16,32,64,128,256,512,1024. it's definitely time to upgrade your whole computer. by the time you spend all the money to upgrade you'll have payed enough money to purchase a new one. windows vista is about to come out you'll need a modern 64 bit computer with at least a 1GB a memory.

crucial.com has a neat tool. If you know your system name and model their tool will tell you what type of memory you can use.
Their price may not be best but you'll know what you need.

Unsure of what you have and/or use download belarc advisor.
This excellent free program will inventory your harware/software and tell you lots about your system.

Just be careful and befriend a pc geek to help.
