There are many explanations for how the tie came to be. Some say it started out as a napkin (to wipe your mouth after eating or for keeping the food from falling on the shirt). Some say it started with royalty wanting to look high class. Some say it was worn to protect from the neck getting injured during sword fights. Who knows?
My guess is that it was invented by some disgruntled woman who wanted to keep her husband in line. When he strayed she yanked on the "tie". The other women saw that and the whole doggone thing caught on.

Men's neck-wear started out as a practical thing, scarves. It evolved over time into cravats and ties.
Cravats (or ascots) are considered formal, though I prefer them to neckties even on informal occasions. Neckties are appropriate for informal wear and some casual wear. Most men tend to pick really bad ties when left to their own devices. I favor Italian silk ties which can be picked up at a fairly good price in many cities, like London.
Anyway, informal wear is generally considered appropriate for most business applications being between manual labor and the world of formality.

Its just for looks. Originally ties where invented by thr French for sword fighting. The cloth can deflect a strike to the throat.

It is an accessorie. Mens business suits tend to be rather plane... like black jacket and pants and what not, the tie adds flare to the whole outfit :)

I'm with you, sister. And while we're at it, what's up with everybody washing themselves and combing their hair. It's just the man trying to make us all the same. I'm not down with that, sister. I stay natural all the time. No ties, no showers, and no make-up. Well....ok...sometimes I like a little lipstick, but I just want to feel sexy sometimes. You know?
