How does America maintain its power.?

When I look at what passes for culture in the United States I am appalled. I am talking about B-list celebrities who get way to much ink, like the Hiltons and their ilk. If Americans are so lacking in intellect, how do we maintain our ascendency in the world. I have heard that it is because it is run by a handful of technocrats, who keep things goin.

What appeases the prurient interests of the masses is not necessarily what keep us going. There are many Engineers, Scientists and scholars, along with some real writers and journalists who have a marked impact on the direction our country takes.

With that, there are lots of beurocrats who make policy based on polls and special interests. These do things like sending us to war and spending our money. Unfortunately they do have too much impact on the projects that many of our Scientists and Engineers work on, but somehow the true leading thinkers are able to find funding for some of what's really important.

My hope for our country is that some day we'll realize that we're a part of the world, and not it's master.

America got its power when the Nazis destroyed Europe. America holds on to its power though military might, monetary might, and through geographical advantage. Nations like the USA, Canada, and China are hard to attack when they are nearly the size of a continent. No one can destroy us through the military without having to come up with some ingenious ways to get to thte mainland.

The problem is that America is pretty good at destroying itself by spending all its money on useless wars in the desert (billions upon billions of dollars), taking away freedoms left and right, being undiplomatic and finally marketing stupidity. America will lose its power only through suicide. Unfortunately, I can already see the knife in hand...

This is a great question. Technology is used for Military, communication, entertainment, and, sometimes, medicine...but never for peace....weird ain’t it???
