There seem to be a lot of misconceptions on what a Call Center Representative is by the previous responses. Every company has it's own culture for their "call center", but the industry has some benefits too. For others benefit, a call center is NOT a telemarketer, or a glorified telemarketer, it is a help desk or support agent..
The value of the call center representative is that a well paid, well trained representative can make your company look great by how well they answer the phone or ticket/instill confidence with the customer that you can help them solve the problem, and communicate well until the problem is solved. That is valuable to the corporation that understands the importance, it is costly to the corporation that tries to do everything on the cheap and compromises quality.
Benefits:
Fast paced environment, lots to learn, never dull as you ramp up.
Good pay for good agents, with great customer service skills.
Great career path! My work as a Call Center Representative, prepared me for IT Operations Management, which led me to IT Service Management.

Usually it pays very well for the qualifications. It's not manual labour.
The benefits of working in a call centre are so much less than all the bad things about working in a call centre. Don't do it. Get a better/different job.
