This question definitely depends on types of music they play and personal opinion... in my opinion, there is no "best guitarist alive". If I had to pick, it would probably be Tommy Emmanuel, finger-style guitarist from Australia. He's pretty famous there, but not as well known in US I guess. He's got some amazing virtuosity. Here's some honorable mentions: Clapton, BB King, Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, Ritenour, Van Halen, Les Paul (still alive!)... can't think of any more at the moment... taking out dead guitarists really does shorten the list :P

All of the above, and I am sure, the names below, are worthy of the "best guitarist" moniker. However, I saw a guy at the Guitar Festival In Dallas, by Eric Clapton, who could be the next virtuoso. His name was Michael Kelsey. I am not sure of the spelling. He played as a filler. He won a local talent search in the DFW area, and won the chance to play between acts at the festival. What a gig! He played a unique song that I cannot do justice to by trying to explain what it was like to watch it. He used the body, neck ,and head of that guitar like no other I have ever seen. He used the mic stand, mic cord, and mic itself for some sort of instrument, or sound effect. It was a very cool experience. I vote for him...........

Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, and Santana.

Those are my personal favorite. But if I had to choose the best over everyone else it would definitely be Carlos Santana.

okay it depends what kind of style you like

i recommend neoclassical metal because it require more skill. With chromatics, tapping and arpegios

so i am going to recommend Yngwie J Malmsteen

but if you like softer stuff
check out Jason Becker palyinng pagginnis 5th caprice

but if you liek more metal stuff try checkign out the guitarists in Dragon force or Children of Bodom.
