In addition to everyone else, to illistrate the difference between 2-d and 3-d. If you look at a wall, and forget about it having a fixed width, you currently see only 2 dimensions, a length, and a height.

For a 3-d object, have a look at an opened door, this door has the 2 dimension from before, a length, and a height. It also has a 3rd dimension being the width.

A 2D Object is a 2 dimensional object that is flat (Only has legnth and height)

A 3D Object is a 3 dimensional object that takes this further and adds depth to the picture to make it appear like a real object would (Legnth X Height X Depth) Almost everything now is in 3D

2 dimensions and three dimensions are different only because 3d has one extra dimension: the depth dimension.

2d has height and length, but 3d goes deep and provides a perspective that creates a unique view when looked at from different angles. It allows physical objects to be represented in their entirety, and not simply an outline, silohuette, or other type of abstract image.

d stands for dimension. 2d means something that got only height and width, it can be placed in a plane. 3d is something that got, height, width and depth, and you cant place it in plane, but you need space.
simple example is old mario brothers is a 2d game, while the wolf3d is a 3d game. In mario you can make mario move only in two dimension. But in wolf 3d you can make the character move anywhere.
