Just buy the specified memory. It's pretty common. You can also probably use faster memory without a problem, but don't go slower that the DDR400 PC3200. For price comparisons, check out www.pricewatch.com . They have memory listed by speed and size. Depending on whether all your memory slots are full, you may be able to just add to the memory in your computer instead of replacing the memory in your computer.

I'm sure there are computer shops in Toronto, so you'll just have to shop around.

Goody, a Torontonian, me too :D Well, this is going to be a fun question to answer.

First off, There should be no reason why your computer is not detecting all 512 MB of RAM, especially when it came with the computer itself. You may want to call the center where you bought the computer if this is actually the case, or pull the ram out and plug it in again.

Now to answer your question, the size of RAM you need to buy is totally up to you, I suggest buying the 1GB ram since it is only about 20 dollars more than the 512 MB ram and having more RAM never hurts. As for the type of RAM you need, the numbers you provided are really not all that important. You just need to pay attention to the second set of values you gave. DDR400 means you are using dual channel ram; when you go shopping, just ask the store representatives for DDR400 RAM or something that is compatible with it. The 400MHz is the speed of the RAM, it is best to get something around that speed so no ram is faster than the other. As for PC3200, these days, most RAM is that or more (around 5300ish) ...

Finally, where to get RAM in Toronto. I hope I dont appear like making advertisements but I suggest you visit a Best Buy store (the one at Yorkdale Mall is good) as they carry a range of RAM for most uses (your RAM type is quite common so it would be easy to buy). As for pricing, this week, Best Buy has a 79.99 1GB ram stick that I highly recommend. If that is not your preference, feel free to go browse the shop and pick one to your liking. The staff there is very helpful so feel free to ask anyone.

If you have any other questions, feel free to email me.

The reason why your computer is showing only 384MB of RAM is because of the onboard graphics on your laptop. They share the memory with the rest of the system. In you case, your video is using 128MB of your system memory, which leaves you with your 384MB.

Before you run out and buy more RAM, I would make sure there aren't other requirements for the game. Onboard graphics (regardless of amount) are probably not going to give you great results if it's a graphics intensive game. But, otherwise, a 1GB stick should do the trick.

I own 2 emachines and I had the same issue. I wanted to run Battlefield 2 and F.E.A.R. and also the new Battlefield 2142 all which take a lot of memory. What you want to realize is that some games need a video card.

The video card is what you would want to start with first. What you can do is look at the game you want to play and look for the Video card requirements.

The emachine you have has its own INTERNAL video and no video card.

So here is my advice to you. First you need to find out if you can put a video card in your emachine.

There are 3 main kinds of video cards.
PCI
PCI Express
AGP

You most likely have a pci slot
But if you do a search on the Internet and look at the specs on your system you can find out.

So video card is more important than memory.

For example if someone wants to play games like Battlefield 2 F.E.A.R. then no amount of extra memory will help unless first the video card meets the specific requirements.

The good news is that video cards are cheap, cheap cheap.

But video card is where you should look first. For example, in the game BAttle field 2 look closely at the system requirements:

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

* Windows XP (32-bit) with Admin rights
* 1.7 GHz Intel Celeron D / Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon XP/ Sempron or greater
* 512 MB of RAM or more
* 8x or faster CD/DVD drive
* 2.3 GB free hard drive space or more
* Video: DirectX 9.0c compatible (see video)
* Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible (Sound Blaster X-Fi series recommended )
end of requirements.

Did you see how it says 512mb will run it ok? So the memory is ok but look closely at the requirements again. It says you need video which runs Directx 9.0c So when looking for video cards find one that uses Directx 9.0c All video cards now a days run that and it will show in the specs.

So if you already have 512mb memory and you added more, you still wouldn't be able to play this game for example because your video is ON BOARD VIDEO.

But I solved it easily by doing this.

First find out what kind of video slot you have available and I bet you have pci or pci express slot.

IMPORTANT: When you go to install the video card you have to first disable the on board video. Which just means you click on it in the control panel and do DISABLE. It's real easy.

Then you snap in the video card and start your computer.
So in closing I know your question was about playing a game and adding memory but I know you want a correct answer. SO remember with games there are always 2 requirements your system has to meet.

1. Memory
2. Video card requirements

The good news for you is it is cheaper to get a video card and also you can even add memory on top of that so your system will fly. I have a pci express slot in my emachine so I got a video card for it and can play any game out there and I also have 2 gigs of memory. The most memory you can put in your machine is 2 gigs. That would be 1 gig stick in each slot. But 2 gigs is way more than enough.

Go to http://www.ebay.com and look online for memory and video cards. I know you don't want to buy them online but its a good education on it all. Good luck :-)
