Most people are afraid to live. They put limits on themselves and are afraid of change and don't like to take risks. I am trying to alter how I react so that I am not afraid to live.

Yes, I'm completely neurotic but I don't let fear stop me. I force myself to do things that scare me because I don't want to live in a box. I had parents that were afraid of everything & lead a very sheltered existence. Things probably scare me as much as they do my parents, but avoiding life isn't an option for me. I read once that courage isn't the absence of fear, but feeling the fear & doing it anyway. In that sense I suppose you could say I'm courageous! (I've climbed mountains, performed on-stage, bought a house on my own in a new community, ended a safe relationship to delve into a new one...)

Some people are afraid of death. Death is just a sleep (& then hopefully Heaven for me!) The pressure is off then! It's life that's scary! So much to do!

I am both afraid to live and afraid to die.

Religion did this to me. All I can see are two sides: a small-minded 4000 year old cosmology on this one, and a simplistic Renaissance painting on the other.

Religion confined my thinking to this tiny realm when I was young. I am left with stupidity and visions of a place with alternating harps and halloween demons.

I hope you fare better than I did. Keep your mind open as long as you can before the zealots close it for you.

i am not afraid to live. i don't have specific reasons to be afraid of life but plenty reasons to die and mix with the elements. i am sure "are you afraid to die?" would get even better philosophical and theologically oriented answers.
