Sounds like you have used old gas. After using a outboard motor, unplug the gas line and run the motor until it quits. This will get all the gas out of the motors inside. Never use old gas, and clean out the line coming from the tank. Maybe your plugs are bad also. Make sure you pump up the line coming from the tank also when you use the motor. Take it in and have carburetor cleaned and tell them everything you can about how it has been running.

If it starts its not the battery but a bad battery or one with low voltage will eventually damage the starter motor they don't like low voltages! Whip out the plugs and replace them, and while you have them out do a compression test on each cylinder. If there is more than a 15% difference between each cylinder you have a compression problem and a re-build job. Apart from that check all your ground wires in the electrical system. Bad gas could be another issue which if it is the carb/s will have to come off and cleaned. Use Carb and Choke cleaner.

A bad battery CAN affect the performance of an engine, if the battery is shorted. I've had my car die completely in th middle of the road, for just that reason, and the same can apply to an o'board.... although it's not common, it's something to check, by switching to a known good battery

I don't think the battery would affect the running. More likely you let the engine set up for a while and the jets have old gas varnish in them. Running it may help or you may have to get the carb/s cleaned.
Clean your spark plugs and put fresh gas in your tank.
Good luck. Pops

As a few other people commented, it could be the gas. I t could also be the "power packs," I had this problem several times with an older mercury 90hp.

If it starts it has enough juice to run. Needs just alittle to start then the charger takes over. Sounds like you're missing a cylinder. put the plugs and you can tell which one it is. Hope you didn't burn a piston like i did.

battery has nothing to do with outboard except starting it...check your plugs, fuel line or compression in the engine
