Join Flylady. If you really pay attention and read along, you'll learn some valuable things about yourself. I am the same way, I never could concentrate on what was important, instead, I was cleaning the inside of the never used bathroom cabinet with a toothbrush. I am not perfect yet and never will be, but I've learned to do things "good enough" instead of wasting time on things that didn't matter.

Just try to get some things done, like just picking up. It is better to accomplish something than nothing. It is pretty perfect to have everything picked up and put away. Then when you have some extra time you can start deep cleaning, etc. Once you put these things away each week you will start to find that not everything is always out. And you will start putting it back after you use it. To be a true perfectionist you would have to be perfect, and that is not possible no one is perfect. Just find a starting place, and keep at it! I really hope this helps I also consider myself a perfectionist. This is what helps me! Good luck to you.

Break it down into little tasks. For instance, clean off and dust your entertainment center. Takes five minutes. You can do it anytime and it is done.
Start a load of clothes washing. While the washer is running, collect all the trash you see and take it out. When you come back, put a tea kettle on to boil and load the dishwasher while you wait for it. You can run a rag over the counter while you're waiting for the tea to brew in the cup, fix yourself up a little tray with a treat and take it to the living room.
Before you sit down, change the clothes to the dryer. Give yourself that treat. When you get done, look around the living room for any dishes and add them to the tray. That goes back to the kitchen.
Simple steps. You can get a lot done in the time it takes to wash and dry a load of clothes.
Putting on some good music while you do pick up and put away also helps. I use audio books, too.

Sometimes I have the same problem. Make a list of everything that needs to be done in every room. Pick one room to start in. Start a load of laundry, then start in the first room using your list. When that room is done, throw clothes you've just washed in dryer and start another load. Look at your list and choose another room to work in. Keep going just like that until the house is clean.
I'm a perfectionist (only when it comes to housework) and I LOVE lists!!!! They really work for me and keep my mind on the task in front of me. I don't think about the next room until I'm done with the first.

I saw this on Dr Phil once - he suggested doing one thing at a time and use the "only touch it once" technique. When you pick up something put it where it is supposed to be. If you can not figure out where to put it hold on to it until you do. Don't just say "too hard" and put it down to try something else.
I find having lots of storage helps too. Make sure there is a place for everything and put it back when you are finished using it.

i have the same problem. put on your favorite cd. have a cup of coffee...and start with one task. i usually start by picking up all the trash and putting it in a pile. when that's done i take it all to the can. then i throw all the dirty clothes in a corner to be sortet later. start with the easiest things that will make the biggest impact...that way you will feel like you're making progress right from the beginning. in the bedroom it helps to make the bed right away. hope this helps. i just cleaned my room 30 minutes ago. whew!

That is very funny to imagine. You are a perfectionist to the point that you are living in a mess? Wow! Well, you've got to start the cleaning and tidying up from somewhere. You can start by putting things in their place, and then tackle one room at a time, starting with the kitchen, then the living room...save your bedroom for last. Good luck and happy cleaning!

yeah, take things in small manageable chunks - dont get lost in the forest and trees phenomenon.
Also - ya gotta learn when good enough really is good enough - and move on to the next thing.

START IN ONE ROOM AND STAY THERE TILL IS NEAT.
NEAT NOT PERFECT.
THEN ANOTHER ROOM -AND SO FORTH.
NOT ONE HOUR BUT 30 MINUTES PER ROOM.
ONCE EVERTHING IS IN ORDER YOU CAN PAY ATTENTION TO SPECIFIC NEEDS.
