Yes it is. If you do not understand "movement and rest" and "the root of all" one can easily be held in a trance by the movement of water or fire.
You see you are made of these things and watching them returns the mind to the root of your creation.
If you don't understand the root nor have knowledge of it then a trance you will be in, as your mind takes this rest because it has need to do so as you rarely give it that opportunity.
If you understand the root then resting the soul in knowledge of the root true consciousness can be found. Wake you up it can.
Your looking in the right direction.

Running water , such as a water fall is relaxing . I find a fire-place fire to be soothing ; but find the opposite true if I see something on fire on TV or outdoors .

It is relaxing! The fire is warm and cosy. Listening to running water is a refreshing sound and so peaceful.

because it gives our conscious mind something to focus on while our unconscious mind gets to have fun.
try this: look up into the corner of a room where two walls meet the ceiling. do you see a pyramid? keep watching - does the point appear to be moving in and out?
ooh this is fun!

Good question. It can certainly have a soothing effect. But pyromaniacs may experience stimulation.
Looks like good research topic, wonder how many studies have been done?
