My refridgerator is about 18 years old and it runs all the time. I think the freezer part of it comes on and shuts off more or less like it is susposed to but the fridge doesn't get as cold as it used to and I have the control set to the lowest setting. I can hear something running all the time.
Do refridgerators wear out in time and need to be replaced?

Yes.
But you may have a repairable problem. If the compressor continues to run but the box is no longer holding the proper temperature, you may have a bad defrost heater.
Maybe a bad evaporator fan motor is causing the problem. Maybe the condenser coil is plugged up and overheating. If so, clean it with a brush.

Your 'frig' is 18 years old. So if a major repair is needed(such as compressor or evaporator), I recommend a newer refrigerator. A new refrigerator will most likely save you money and allow you to sleep at night.

Refrigerators have thermostats so when it reaches a temp the fan and compressor shut off. You could just have a bad switch or thermostat. It depends on your appliance. The other thing could just be ice. If there is ice build up you need to defrost and that could help. Also if the door seal it bad and air is leaking that will keep it running all the time.

But, if it is that old it is definitely not as efficient as a new one.

Yes, do replace it with a energy saver one that is available these days. Your old refrigerator is using up a lot of useless energy.

You have to check to make sure the light goes off when you close the door. If it does go off, your fridge is fine. If it stays on when you close the door, man you got problems.
