3 people share a hotel room for $30 dollars, each person paying $10 each. The manager realizes he overcharged them by $5. He give the bellboy the $5 to return to the guests. The guests each keep a dollar, so now they payed $9 each instead of $10, and gave the belloby a $2 tip. 3 guest payed $9 =$27 plus bellboy $2 tip = $29. Where did the other dollar go??

There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

Your math is wrong. so they payed 30 dollars each and the manager over charged them by 5. Then they each get one which leaves two to the bellboy, making it even. Sorry your question was wrong.

$30 for room , overcharged by 5. 30-5 equals 25. three dollars back equals 28 plus two for the tip equals 30. No lost dollar.

They did not pay $9.00 each. The five was overpayment. They each got one back and gave the bellboy a two dollar tip. They still paid ten each and there is no extra dollar that you are asking about.

The room cost $25 not $30. You don't add the $2.00 you subtract it from $27 to get the correct room price of $25.

The three guests didn't pay $9. You have to divide $25 by three (that's the total paid) which is $9.33. They overpaid the bell boy.
