Can you explain the circumstances under which a partner or professional employee of an audit firm could accept
a job with a public company audit client for the firm? With a private company audit client for the firm?

It would be dependent upon the specific Non-Disclosure/Non-compete clause the employee signed with the audit firm. Also relevant would be the laws of the state in which the agreement was subject to.

Sorry to be so vague - but there are a lot of details that would have to be spelled out to make a specific answer.

this happens quite frequently. one of the reasons you become certified and part of the big guys is for exposure. basically to succeed as an accountant you need to do one of two things. either work 80 hours a week for the rest of your life (not including social obligations associated with your job) and make partner. OR you do what you are good at and work really hard for a few years and when you make manager - hello real world. one of your clients who respects you and your work that has similar values and beliefs will offer you a sweet deal. be real. be honest. be yourself. it will happen.

so anyway, the choice is yours.
