Most (but not all) laptop can only have ONE internal hard drive. There simply isn't a space to put another one.

One thing you *can* do is, to put the new hard drive and install the new Operating system. Then take the old hard drive, place it in an external USB case, connect it to your laptop and transfer files off it. But this way, you cannot move your software, just the data.

Another thing you can do is to connect both new and old harddisk to a DESKTOP computer, then use utilities such as ghost to copy the entire disk. This is often beyond the capability of novice PC users.

I am guessing that you are removing and installling a hard drive from and to a laptop? I also am guessing that you are looking for the plastic piece with pins on both ends that allows the hard drive to connect to it and then the other side of the adapter connects to a data cable or connection inside the laptops hard drive bay?

I am not sure what you would call it but I am sure if you called a LAPTOP computer repair person and describe it somewhat like I just did then they will most likely know what you are talking about. You can most likely purchase one from the Laptop manufacturer IE: Dell, HP, or ? Hope this helps.

Partition, partitioning: Free space on a hard disk must be partitioned before it can be used by an operating system. Creating a partition reserves a physical portion of the hard drive space for use as a logical drive, or volume, that the operating system can address.

Volume: A volume is how the operating system 'sees' your free disk space. Volumes (also called logical drives) are represented in Windows by drive letters such as C:, E:, etc. Volumes are formed by partitioning the free space of a hard drive. Volumes must be formatted with a file system before data can be stored on them.

Formatting: Formatting is the act of creating a file system on a volume, so that the operating system can store and retrieve data on that volume.

File system: A file system provides a means of organizing and retrieving information written to a hard disk or any other storage medium. A file system is created on a volume when it is formatted. Common Windows file systems include FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32) and NTFS (NT File System).

You can buy an external hard disk box which has its own power cord and a USB data cable.

You can fit the new or old or hard disk into the external box. Just make sure that the jumper the external hard disk is set for “primary” bootable drive.

If you are using Windows XP, just plug in the USB data cable to your laptop. Your computer will recognize it instantly.

After that, transferring the data to your laptop is a breeze.
