My IUD was dislodged last night during sex and it came out completely today. What are the chances that I might be pregnant? I've had my IUD (the copper kind) for almost 4 years now and I've never had any problems. I'm kinda of freaking out right now and I won't be able to see my doc until Monday the earliest.

One of the things the IUD does is prevent implantation. Since it is not there, if you happen to ovulate at just the right time (a few days before or after unprotected sex) you can become pregnant. Although you may not be able to see your doc till Monday, call their emergency number and have them phone in a prescription for the morning after pill into a pharmacy that is open TONIGHT. You need to take the pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex, but as time goes by, it becomes less effective. Here is a link to info about emergency contraception: http://ec.princeton.edu/

There is a 50/50 chance on that one however your body ovulates at the same time every month even with an IUD. So as long as you weren't ovulating at the time you odds against being pregnant increase.

I know that an IUD is one of the most effective methods of birth control, its even said to be more effective than sterilization. But I don't know what the risk is with it falling off.

Obviously, you should get a hold of your doctor, but you already know that. I'm afraid I can't really help you, but I think the ladies at the livejournal community linked below can. Make an account if you don't already have one, join the community, and fill out their survey. They would be much more equipped to asses your pregnancy risk.

That is very odd for it to dislodge after being in for 4 yrs. I would call in the pharmacy for a Morning after pill and go see the Dr. Monday morning

having an iud in can actually affect the growth of your baby, and can cause alot of other complications. i wouldnt be waiting until your doctor returns,go to the emergency room at your nearest hospital as soon as you can, like in the next 24 hours,to have the iud removed safely.dont panic, just get to the hospital, or if you like, ring through and speak to the e.r staff, who can advise you what to do next.good luck, let us know how you go,ok?
