If the conditions are right inside the woman's body they can live up to 5 days. I read this in a fertility book. The cervical fluid produced by the woman's body near and around ovulation create an environment that is very conducive to sperm.

Sperm stays active in your body for 10 hours! If your worried about being pregnant check into the morning after pill you can take it up to 72hours after sex! but you have to be over 16

5 days. They did a study where a couple had sex on only 1 day during the cycle. The couples who got pregnant had sex on 1 of 6 days:
5 days before ovulation
4 days before ovulation
3 days before ovulation
2 days before ovulation
1 day before ovulation
ovulation day
Some couples got pregnant even though they only had sex once, 5 days before ovulation. The most fertile day was 1 day before ovulation.
Individual results will vary but statistically enough couples got pregnant by having sex 5 days before ovulation that that day got counted as part of the fertile window.

Sperm can stay inevitably(fertilization) but after about 24 hours sperm will die if they are unsuccessful.
