Actually in writing a software program, there are two things - the logic and the syntax of the language. The logic is more important, and is more inherent than learnt. If you are good in the logic, the language is merely a tool to implement it.

For a beginner, C is the best because it forms the basis of all the other languages (most, at least). But if you are an absolute beginner, it would be possibly better if you start off with basic / visual basic just to get the logic at an easier pace. Once you are thorough with C, you can face the world.

It's the simplest and the one newbie gain knowledge of-in a position language that's utilized by specialists (e.g. Walt Disney Imagineers). Since this is a prime-degree programming language, the syntax isn't complicated, and most commonly is similar to C++ in our quick laptop age. Python may also be checked out as a style of stepping stone, while you grasp Python, learning C/C++, Perl, PHP, Java, and so forth., will end up a lot less complicated. And additionally, with Python, you'll be able to code at lightning pace. C, C#, and C++ are all slight variations of the same language. Learn one and you will be able to do the other two. Visual Basic is a little easier, but not used much professionally.

Pick any language and start learning. The concepts you will learn are usable with any language. It is just a matter of learning the syntax (exact wording) of a new language. You can get that from the appendix of any good book on a language.

In the world of Linux and graphics programming, C++ is the most commonly used. There is software that makes graphics and animation programming more user friendly, but it is written in C++ and you will benefit the most from learning C++ first.

C isn't used much for advanced game programming as it doesn't support many of the color and animation libraries that C++ supports.

You might want to consider Java. It is open source (that means free) and the IDEs are often free too (I suggest Eclipse). It will give you a fairly simple and fairly thorough introduction to programming. Note, you will most likely *not* want to USE Java for game programming, you will want to use C++, but that is a transition probably better made later, if you are serious about programming.
