I like dogs and cats but since I live in an apartment a cat is my only option. When I buy a house I plan on getting a dog because I will have a back yard. Besides, I think that Dogs are way too needy. What do you think?

Been to both worlds. Whichever you opt for - try to keep the animal indoors. They'll be less apt to become ill, get beaten up, get run over, suffer abuse, get shot, and, they'll live much longer than if they were allowed to roam freely.

Dogs have two large strikes against them. They get funky and need bathing. They must be let out or taken for a walk. Almost forgot - they also can bark loudly....................

Cats groom themselves, use their own indoor toilets, never need to be taken outdoors, and they are, generally, silent.

Both cats and dogs chew on things, knock things over, upchuck now and then, shed hair, and get in the way occasionally.

Cats sleep a major portion of the day. They are not as affectionate as dogs. If cats jump up on you, they won't ordinarily knock you over. Indoor cats do need to have their front paws de-clawed. If the litter box is cleaned daily the house will not stink of felines.

Both are fun, but as I grow older I've gravitated towards cats. They are less demanding.

If you think that "dogs are way too needy" why would you get a dog when you have a backyard?? I think that dogs are great pets. They're loyal and loveable and friendly. Maybe some breeds are more demanding than others. I once had a cockapoo who was hyper and chewed up shoes and literally wrecked our house--overturned potted plants, chewed up flower arrangements. Cats are low maintenance animals and usually, aloof, but they have a special wisdom about them. A sixth sense.

i love both cats and dogs, both are needy tho, and either way you have to use a pooper scooper, just one you scoop on the inside(litter box) and the other you have to do the outside (the yard)--
had our cat first, we always said she is a dog in a cats body, she used to sit up and beg for treats, chase her tail and wait for us at the door wagging her tail, got the dog next(and he is not a "lap" dog--he's a hunting dog), he is a cat in a dogs body--he bats around yarn, sniffs at the cats butt, and lays on the top of the chair back swishing his tail while looking out the window --i think they are like that Lily Tomlin -Steve Martin movie where they are both in one body or something like that--go figure?
I think we have nutty pets, maybe there is something to that thing about pets/owners having the same personalities.....

I have had cats that were very friendly and some that weren't. But, boy, nothing beats the happy wag of your dogs tail when you walk in the door (or if your dog doesn't have a tail, the wag of his/her happy butt :)!)

Dogs are better than cats.Yes you do have to house train them but when they are trained you dont have to deal with a litter box. And they are all around good companions.

Dog's are men's best friend. It's fun to have a dog than a 'cool' cat, which isn't that affectionat.
