who works at a funeral home and what do they do?

A mortician, along with several other people run a funeral home. The mortician has several jobs, depending on the size of the parlor. They may go to retrieve the bodies, prep the bodies & get them dressed. They may also welcome the families in to make arrangements, etc... Most funeral homes have different people to do these jobs. There is always someone on call @ a funeral home....sometimes to go get a cadaver, othertimes to handle family arrangements. Usually the person on call lives on the premises. Each person does double duties, as the time needs. They also order caskets, clothes, flowers...Some places have thier own in house floral arranger. The bigger funeral homes will have 1-2 ppl. for each job. Most have a 'secretary' to answer the incoming calls & direct them to the ppl. in that area of expertise, or set up an appt. for the families to come in to make the arrangements. I use to assist with autopsies... I wouldn't mind working as an embalmer in a funeral home. But I would have to go back to school.. and I am no good at chemistry, I hear they are hard on chemistry.. So I don't see it happening.

I wouldn't be any good with the hair and make up, or dealing with the families either.

and why does everyone look at a dead person and say, "he/she looks so good." NO THEY DONT.. they look DEAD! geesh.. that's why I'm being cremated.

People work there.. Undertakers, secretaries, pastors. They take care of the needs of grieving people. They help them to bury their loved ones with dignity....choose a casket, plan a service, choose a headstone... choose between cremation and embalming... Understand the cost of their services. It is more than just a job, it is a ministry to hurting people, and a difficult and sometimes emotional job.
