there are two solutions to this. first, (assuming you are running xp home) open up control panel and select the system icon. click on the hardware tab, then click on device manager. if your sound card is already installed, it should show up under sound, video and game controllers. the alternative is to remove the panels on the tower and actually look at the sound card itself. if it's built-in the motherboard, (not a card plugged into a slot) you need to find out the make and model of the motherboard and check out the manufacturer's info.

Two ways to do it:
1. Right click My Computer
2. Click on PROPERTIES
3. Click on the tab HARDWARE
4. Click on DEVICE MANAGER
5. Click on SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS
That tells you what sound card you have
1. Click START, then SETTINGS
2. Click CONTROL PANEL
3. Click SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES
4. Click on the tab AUDIO and look for SOUND PLAYBACK. The DEFAULT DEVICE is your sound card.
