I don't believe it should be. But technically yes. If you don't believe me, go ask the guy in this article who went to jail for it.

I am not positive of the specifics of the law but I know they are cracking down on people for illegally using someone elses wireless network. It should not be illegal if they do not have it secured though, it is there dumb fault.

Now if you are using it for any ILLEGAL things like hacking sites or other ILLEGAL matters then you would DEFINATELY be breaking the law. Don't get caught...

It is unethical, but not illegal (for now), to use it without permission. If they do not want anybody to use it, they should at least use a WEP key.

Beside, if there is a public WiFi network available around that area, your computer may not choose the public one if that family's AP casts a better signal to your PC. Unless you switch manually, your PC is going to find the best signal to send its packets.

Some people warn you not to get caught. But think about it, how can you be caught? They have to have proper equipment to triangulate your position to find you. Even if they have the equipment, unless you are uploading a file, you are not sending long enough uplink signals for them to track you. Even if they have found you, they cannot search your PC (to get your MAC address, e.g.) without having a warrant.

It is illegal, though, if you poke their PCs on their network.

It would be illegal for you to tap into their wireless connection, but they are not using very good judgment by not having it secure ^.^

In essence and a word NO! that's as a lot as whomever owns the relationship to shelter the relationship. in the journey that they leave it open and also you ensue to be close sufficient to connect to the neighbor's. you probably did not say the position you stay, basically contained in the U.S. or yet another united states of america. contained in the U.S. that's as a lot because the fellow possessing the internet connection to ensure undesirable connections aren't to any extent further being made. i'm unable to speak for each of the states contained in the U.S., yet contained in the state I stay (the state of bewilderment, no Michigan) in there aren't any regulations at latest that forestalls unauthorized persons from having access to an open router.

Yes, it is illegal to use another's connection. It is akin to me coming to your house to use your phone. The person does need to secure or hide their SSID.
