Firewalls do not protect against virus. What they do is monitor traffic into and out of your computer and warn you if someone is trying to hack into your computer. It can also block most such attacks. But it does not guard against viruses, which are software programs that run on your computer, not internet traffic.

You need three basic type of programs on a computer to keep it safe:
A firewall (such as Zone Alarm) to protect from hackers
A Virus scanner (such as AVG or Avast) to guard against viruses
A spyware scanner (such as Ad-aware and/or Skybot Seek&Destroy) to care against spyware
All of those are free programs available from download.com

Each provides a different type of protection.
