Charles Robert Darwin FRS (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist who achieved lasting fame by producing considerable evidence that species originated through evolutionary change, at the same time proposing the scientific theory that natural selection is the mechanism by which such change occurs. This theory is now considered a cornerstone of biology, and has significantly affected other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology and anthropology.
Darwin developed an interest in natural history while studying first medicine, then theology, at university. Darwin's observations on his five-year voyage on the Beagle brought him eminence as a geologist and fame as a popular author. His biological finds led him to study the transmutation of species and in 1838 he conceived his theory of natural selection. Fully aware that others had been severely punished for such "heretical" ideas, he confided only in his closest friends and continued his research to meet anticipated objections. However, in 1858 the information that Alfred Russel Wallace had developed a similar theory forced an early joint publication of the theory.
His 1859 book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life (usually abbreviated to The Origin of Species) established evolution by common descent as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. He continued his research and wrote a series of books on plants and animals, including humankind, notably The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex and The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.
In recognition of Darwin's pre-eminence, he was buried in Westminster Abbey, close to John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

Your description is a little off. Darwin formulated the Theory of Evolution, he didn't discover it and its natural selection, not selective breeding. Others during that period were also developing the same theory but Darwin publish the first major book on the subject.

He developed a theory of evolution based on variation and selection. He used selective breeding, especially of pigeons to study variation and selection. In his book, "The Origins of Species" he starts of describing selective breeding to establish his theory and then expands it to include natural selection.
His voyage on the HMS Beagle is important. He also wrote a very interesting paper/book on earthworms. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society on his return from his 5 year Beagle voyage. On the Beagle voyage he landed at the Galopagos Islands and from the adaptions of the Finches he got the evolution idea. Many more facts but my fingers get tired easy.

He did not "discover" the theory of evolution - he speculated and hypothesized.
Darwin's book "On the Origin of Species" actual title is "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life"
Darwin was a racist - he had problems with many things. He rejected the bible and developed his own path by observing a few animals and birds.....
It's very sad to me to watch our society so easily melt into the arms with a sigh of relief - of a single man's unproven theory..... how gullible we have become
let the thumbs down reign!

Most people couldn't tell you who is on the 10 dollar bill. Most of the Christians are live and let live and hardly riot over who's face is on the money. I was shocked when some hottie from the 40's Marlyian Monroe was put on stamps, and another actor who killed himself with drugs was put on stamps. Elvis Presley No one noticed or cared. We have a few radical Republicans who scream about what to call an ever green tree, making us call it a Christmas tree. But that only makes them seen a little ridiculous and it is hard after that to take them seriously.

I believe he also discovered the theory of evolution through natural selection, in which weaker genes degenerate as stronger, environment-adapting genes survive on for the sake its species.
In reference to his theory of evolution(s), he also thought that species gradually [as opposed to occasional bursts of evolution] changed over many generations and became better adapted to new conditions.
