Is it common for directors to not callback everyone, that is, does the fact that you made callbacks often mean that you still have a chance of getting a role?

Directors will tell you that callbacks don't mean anything and that they're only because they need to take a second look at certain people.

Common wisdom will tell you that getting called back means that you're still in consideration - the role has been narrowed down to a smaller group of people.

It's possible to be cast without a callback of course, but they are used as a way of narrowing down the field.

Getting a callback is a good thing. The majority of directors I've worked with narrow it down to 3-5 people per role at the callback stage.

The whole point of callbacks is to narrow down the search. That is, just bring in the people you really think could play the role and see which one is best. If you make callbacks, you have a pretty good chance of getting in the show.
Let's compare it to American Idol. After the initial audition that eveyone sees on TV, all the good people to go L.A., right? That's like the callback. All the people the judges think could possibly be the American Idol are sent. Get it?

if an actor has completely satisfied the director during the initial audition, it is possible that he got the role without getting a callback. Being called back means that the director is undecided about casting a certain role. He wants to see more from an actor or perhaps wants to see how the actors look with each other. for example casting a leading man and a leading woman, he might want compatible heights, or when casting a sidekick, he might want someone shorter. In my experience, for leads and supporting roles, it's good to get called back. Ensemble and chorus roles hardly ever get called back and get cast straight from the initial audition.

My understanding is that when a director calls someone back it is to watch them again. After seeing so many it can be hard to keep everything straight and they need another chance to see you. Callbacks aren't a sign of a possible roll and its not a sign of not a possible role (if that makes since)

callmacks mean that the you are somewhat something that the director is looking for. being called back is good, it means you may fit in somewhere and he wants to see if you do. it usually follows with a cold script reading. have fun! good luck!

August is often the casting month for television sequence, so there nevertheless could be a raffle. in spite of the indisputable fact that, 3 months is an quite long term to watch for a callback. i does no longer carry my breath.
