Once you have created a web page (usually on your own computer), you then have to move those files onto an Internet server before anyone when access them. When you do that, the computer that holds those files is called their "host". The host computer (working with you) is the one that actually get the URL (or website name) for you.

If it is a free service, like Yahoo's geocities, you will get a name like "your_web_page.geocities.com" or "geocities.com/your_web_site".

If you go with a paid host, you can usually get your own unique name like "you_web_site.com". Nobody else's name is part of the URL. The hosting service will work with you to get the name you want (assuming no one is already using it).

Do a Google search for "hosting services" and you will find a wide variety of prices and services available for hosting you web page on the Internet.
