Ok, here's the thing, even inspectors don't catch everything. There is a National Association of Certified Inspectors that you can check. Their website is: http://www.nachi.org/
Your better bet however is to get a home warranty. I usually provide a Blue Ribbon Warranty for my sellers or buyers. It covers 14 months of home or appliance repair. However, since I don't know where you live and Blue Ribbon is in Colorado, you might check out this site. https://www.hwahomewarranty.com/reprofCostAndCoverage.htm

Home inspectors are Knuckelheads!! 90% are not certified nor do they have ANY construction back ground, I've done Electrical work for 20 yrs and seen to many Home inspectors in the area lose their privlage to do Home Inspections because they had NO clue what they were doing, they go to lowes or home depot and get the DIY books and call themselves Home inspectors, Call your towns Planning and zoneing board they will give you the names of Respectable Home Inspectors that know their Job.

Toss a coin! Actually, more info please. Is this a new home, or a re-sale? Dawn's answer is fairly solid, but the organizations that certify home inspectors are usually money motivated. I began a home inspection business after I had a similar situation to yours. If you would like to email me, I can give you some tips to help. Keep in mind that the Realtor is probably not "in bed" with the inspectors that they recommend, they have to be careful of legalities involved. Also remember to ask for references, and you might also check with the BBB to see if there are complaints.

Go to your County Building Codes office. They usually do this on the side. Or, they can give you the name of someone reputable. When I did it I changer $300.00 but, that was years ago.
