It depends on how your night is going to turn out.
Pantyhose are the less expensive option if you just want to look good in your outfit.
Stockings require a garterbelt, though hold-ups/thigh-highs don't. The difference being your choice of the added hardware or a tourniquet around your thigh. However, their benefit is in the bathroom convenience, and if you're wanting to look good in the dress and out of it later.

Sheer stockings and a garter belt. Nothing is classier for an evening out. Pantyhose are too old lady like. Go for the young and sophisticated look with stockings. Get the really sheer kind, black or french coffee.

What's the difference? I thought "stockings" was just an old-fashioned term for pantyhose.

Pantyhose are too utilitarian for an evening dress. They are thick and granny like. Get some ultra sheer black stockings, and a nice a garter belt. The regular stockings without Lycra are much moresheer than the Lycra loaded hold-up style thi-highs, and very sexy and sophisticated, but they need a garter belt.

Stockings with a wide band at the top, more comfortable and very sexy. If your not use to wearing them do a trail run first and make sure your comfortable with them.

If you are going to wear high heeled sandal type shoes, it is easier to go without hose. This is acceptable year round. Panty hose will cause the dress to stick to you and the problem gets worse every time you come in contact with furniture. Also your feet will have a better grip on the high fashion shoe if you are barefooted. Best of luck to you!

I would wear thigh highs because it wont make you feel worned down by them. They're more comfortable and modern. You should get the shear skin tone colored ones because it'll bring out your outfit.
