The criteria between a collector and an addiction is if your collecting has you so fixated that you start to ignore your health(eg.. physical, psychological) and social responsibilities.

Collecting, modelling, shaping just paperclips in your spare time sounds a harmless and I think would be theraputic from the rigors of business and social reponsibilities and it has a harmless fun property if you manage it well. I have heard of even more unusual recreations.

Given you can ask the question then use this time to look seriously at how fixated you are getting now and in the future and also ask those around you for an opinion as well. If it is all consuming and people remark you are obsessive then seek medical/psychological help ASAP.

Can you trade one red one for something else and then trade that item for something better and then trade that for something better and so on until you get a house and then a movie made about it? If so, then it's worth it, right? And then you could wallpaper your new home in paperclips.
