If you want a better understanding of the movie, your best bet is to play the game. If your not into that, I recomend having the subtitles on... One sometimes picks up in subtleties in the script and dialoge and story line when reading what the characters are saying.

The reason that Silent Hill (and The Grudge for that matter) are hard for Americans to get their head around is that a lot of the themes in it are from Shinto Buddhism. The director tried to make a film that would make sense to American moviegoers but still had the Shinto theme. So for example, at the end when they come back home but Sean Bean can't see them (or when he goes to the town and can't find them) is because they died (Sharon, Rahda Mitchell, and the cop) at the beginning of the movie. When they get in the car accident, and the cop goes off her bike...they all died. So everything after that point is in a different plane I guess I would say.

It is based on the highley popular video game series I would defiantley recommend to attempt to play one of these it helps to understand the movie better which was awesome by the way
