There is an urban myth that it was introduced for the benefit of farmers, but in fact farmers were the group most opposed to its original introduction.
It was, in fact, brought in at the instigation of a Britsh man William Willett who liked to ride in the early morning and thought the previous arrangement wasted good daylight in the early morning when he could be enjoying his ride in the country. He published a pamphlet "The Waste of Daylight" in 1907 to encourage a change in the clock to get people out in the best part of the day.
Germany was the first to introduce it in the First World War, in an effort to save coal. Willet died of influenza before he got to see it introduced in the UK.

Daylight Saving Time gives us the opportunity to enjoy sunny summer evenings by moving our clocks an hour forward in the spring.
Yet, the implementation of Daylight Saving Time has been fraught with controversy since Benjamin Franklin first conceived of the idea. Even today, regions and countries routinely change their approaches to Daylight Saving Time

It took the Government several years to decide upon the daylight saving time. But I can recall how it was before then. Those of us in the eastern time zone benefit from having the extra hour of daylight from late spring through fall. I for one appreciated it when my kids were small and coming home from work it gave me more time to share with them before they or I had to retire for the night. You can have later cookouts and do other outdoor activities later on . It just gives greater opportunities for those who work long hours to still have some daylight left to share your time with your families.

It started as a way for farmers to be able to do their farm chores during daylight hours. It turned into a way for vacationers to enjoy more daylight hours of sitting in the sun or on the beaches.

Back around WW1 they did it to save on energy. Since there was a energy shortage. Now there is some concern that it may conserve energy but people nowadays are wasting more in gasoline b/c it is light longer and they stay out and run around more in their vehicles. Next year it will spring forward the first Saturday in April and Fall back the first week of November since the new bill passed.
