If your question is should you take the dog to the vet? the answer is YES. Take your dog to the vet this could be an abscess, cyst, tumor (many types), a swollen salivary gland, sore tooth, a hematoma from a traumatic injury, or an ear canal infection. The moral here is there are many possible diagnoses and the only way to find out what is going on and how to take care of it is to go to a licensed veterinarian.
Good luck!

Is the knot just hair. Some [droopy eared] dogs get ear infections which will cause seepage and therefore the hair knots. If the ear is pink, has no smell, or seepage , it may just be the hair matting. Hair knots can be cut out , and prevented by brushing the hair regularly. If it is not the hair , take your dog to the vet. It is never to late and not always as bad as it seems.

The best pet for a 7 yr. old is something she really really really wants and that her parents want almost as much. Nothing else will work, IMHO. At 7 my daughters had ponies, goats, dogs, cats, mice, fish and then there were the pets then made out in the barn like chickens and ducks and barn cats. Of course, the ponies and goats were in the barn as well, but you get what I mean. But I would agree that a wonderful first time pet for anyone, and a darn good pet for someone who's had many, is a pair of rats, both of the same sex. They are an undiscovered gem in the pet world. But they are very social animals and need a friend of their own species.

Sounds like a tumor. If it's that big, it's probably too late. Everyone needs to check their animals before these things happen. Sounds like you've been neglecting the dog for a while. Whenever you have an animal, you should understand how to take care of them before you bring them into your home.
